This wonderful furniture and rug have been in my family for years. My mother's mother made the original purchase. And I added a couple of pieces that were not here before.
All in all I love the way the wood (floors, furniture, trim) work with this updated cranberry color. I relocated this gold circular mirror from the living room. I love it in the dining room.
This antique secretary makes a great cabinet for crystal. Currently it is holding three generations worth...mine, some of my mother's and some of both of my grandmothers'.
I am very sentimental about all of the pieces in this room. I absolutely love having dinner parties in here.
I found my candle centerpieces and the drapes at Pier 1. The drapery rods and tie backs I picked up at Bed, Bath and Beyond; and the paint is Sherwin Williams. I would still like some tall thin lamps for the side board to complete the room.

Hi, I'm visiting from Savvy Southern Style and I am a first-time visitor. I have to tell you, I love your dining room. I was going to ask you why you chose to go "dark and dramatic" with the beautiful wall color, but after seeing the furniture and rug you inherited, I answered my own question with "OF COURSE!" I think it's beautiful. I am particularly jealous of that antique secretary that looks like tiger maple or rosewood or -- I don't know what, but it's just suberbly gorgeous and I want one just like it. Do you have problems shooing guests out who want to linger for hours and hours afterward after being wined and dined in such a room? LOL! Ema, I am adding your blog to my favorites list. That doesn't mean much, but I will be checking back regularly from now on to see what you're up to. P.S. SOOOOO happy you did not paint over that gorgeous woodwork in your dining room! I do not understand why so many bloggers seem to have an aversion to dark-stained woodwork.

If you've ever paged through classic decorating books and explored the residences of the haut ton (sniff!)in magazines such as Architectural Digest, varying shades of red have always been and continue to be de riguerre in dining rooms. Red in all of its shades, so it is said, stimulates the appetite and also stimulates the brain and thus, conversation, but no guarantee on the quality level of the conversation, LOL! Such a room is meant to be seen by dimmed light over the center of the table at night, augmented by candle light (or faux candlelight), so the focus is on your guests and the table with the feast spread before them. Thanks so much for becoming a "follower." I am honored. Am returning the favor, cuz I think you've got what it takes. I don't follow just anyone, you know :)
