Weekly Finds

I finally have a headboard for my bed.  I knew I would find it eventually.

What took me so long?  Well, I wasn't sure what I wanted, but I knew I would know it when I saw it.  And the one I knew I wanted when I saw it was hiding at the Lucky Rabbit in Hattiesburg, MS.

This place is super cute.  If you live in or are visiting the area this place is a must stop.  They have tons of vintage, recycled, upcycled, and hand made items.  My headboard is a re-purposed door.  Neat, right?

I love how it looks in the space.  The bird canvases that were hanging on the wall are now sitting on the top of the headboard leaning against the wall.  I like the way it looks and they are stable up there.

Last night I was reading my February Better Homes and Gardens magazine and I saw one of the coolest ideas for a kitchen remodel that I have seen in a while.  At first I wasn't sure I liked it, but the more I thought about it the more I loved it.

Couldn't find the real pictures online, so you have to settle for pics of the magazine

This house is in Atlanta and was built in the late 1920's.  Being in a home that was built in the 30's I can tell you that there is not a lot of open space, like modern homes, between the kitchen and living areas.  I thought this was a great reuse of space.  The family did away with the wall between their kitchen and a "bonus room" and relocated the refrigerator to make one large room with a living space.

The more I think about it the more I love it.  When I have people over if I am in the kitchen my guests are hanging out in there with me sitting at the breakfast room table or they are in the family room and I am isolated from them.  This room provides a place for comfortable socializing right in the kitchen.  I think it is genius and so charming.

And of course I applaud their use of subway tile.

I'm still so in love with subway tile.

We did get our "snow" day here in Houston.  Even if the forecast was a little off I am thankful for a lazy day.  I see a movie marathon and a nap in my future.

Have a great day!  Stay warm out there.

Weekend Recap

I had a fantastic weekend!!  The husband and I road tripped to Hattiesburg so he could cook in a BBQ competition and I could have girl time with my sister and nieces.  We pulled in around 2:00 am on Friday morning while everyone was sleeping, but we still got a warm welcome.

Our nieces rock.

Girl time on Friday started with a field trip.  Who doesn't love a good field trip?

My sister and I went with Chelsie and all the second graders to the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Laurel, MS.  We looked at their collection of pastels and the kids got to create their own.  Afterward we picnicked at a very cool park.

The weather was fantastic!  It was a great day for a picnic.  I adore the pine trees in Mississippi; it could be the reason they call it the pine belt.  Hmmm.  :)

Saturday morning we spent a rainy day at the soccer field and then went shopping!  I picked up a bunch of cute fall and Halloween items on sale at Trees and Trends.  Have you ever been to Trees and Trends?  I love that store and wish we had one in Houston.

Little shopping score preview.

Tomorrow I will give you more details on all my shopping finds.  We also made stops at Dillard's, Target, and Hobby Lobby.  My sister and I can always have fun shopping.

The girls never find us embarrassing.

I love love love these girls!

Lindsey, Courtney, Chelsie...I poofy heart you three.

Sammy does too.

I love spending time in Hattiesburg.  It is really nice to take a break from Houston and spend time in a smaller city.  It is so relaxing.  Plus, fall is one of my favorite seasons and that just makes it even better.

The bonus?  The husband's brisket placed 5th out of 25 in the Downtown BBQ Showdown.  Way to go Daniel!  Not bad for a first time competing in a BBQ competition.

I hope your weekend was just as wonderful!  Enjoy your Tuesday.

Weekend Recap

We took a very quick trip to Hattiesburg this weekend to pick up my mom and bring her back to Houston with us.  We saw a gorgeous sunrise on Saturday morning.

We spent the day watching soccer games...

Check me out, I'm a soccer aunt!

...shopping (shocking, I know), and touring the Southern Prohibition Brewery, which is scheduled to open in the spring.

We hit the road back to Houston on Sunday in some very rainy terrible weather.  I was just beginning to relax with Sammy and think it wasn't so bad to let my mom ride shotgun when I got the call from my sister about the Hattiesburg tornado.

A very large tornado hit Hattiesburg on Saturday afternoon.  It left a huge path of destruction through the town.  My sister and her family sheltered in an interior hallway of their home while the tornado tore through.  They could feel their house shaking and hear the windows rattling.

My family was very lucky.  They are all unharmed and they suffered no damage to their home or their businesses.  Many people were not so lucky.  The neighborhood behind my sisters lost homes and the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi suffered much damage.

Please keep all the residents of Hattiesburg in your thoughts and prayers while the city rebuilds after this disaster.
